  1. My 2nd Great Uncle William O Mandel was an inmate and reportedly later became an employee and lived on grounds at Willard. Definitely interested in more information on William and possibly taking the Tour.

  2. I was happy to be able to finally take this tour. Many thanks to all involved – historical society people, former employees and other volunteers. They all shared their knowledge, answered numerous questions and were very professional. Unfortunately Elliot Hall was not open as had been planned. The tour guide for my group went above and beyond by taking extra time to make a stop at the cemetery.

I was saddened to see many buildings in disrepair. Of course those buildings used by the DOC for the drug treatment center have been preserved/rehabbed but are off limits. The DOC does use some of the other buildings for training so their future is secure, at least for the present. As far as being able to see very much of what life was like for the patients – you really need to use your imagination or rely on old photos – as not much remains from the days that this facility was active. If one were able to get inside one of the condemned buildings -perhaps some items were left behind?

I also visited the Town of Romulus Historical Society which is located on the Willard grounds. They are located in an old house that once was home to a Willard employee and his family. The exhibits contain furniture and other items that were made at Willard and some of the suitcases are there as well!

  3. This would be so interesting! Wish I could attend, but I live in New Zealand right now. Would be so exciting to be able to visit and catch a glimpse of the every day existence of those that stayed in Willard. Thank you for posting. Will you be able to attend this year? Photos?

    • Hi Barbara, I will be visiting the cemetery but I’m not going on the tour as I’ve already seen it. If I do take any photos, I will be sure to post them. I have quite a few photos on this blog and links to other blogs and websites that also have photos, so be sure to check those out. Thanks for writing!
