“On February 28, 1896, by act of the Legislature, the New York City asylums for the insane were transferred to state care, under the name of the Manhattan State Hospitals, with three divisions, namely: Manhattan State Hospital East (male department), Manhattan State Hospital West (female department), on Ward’s Island; and Manhattan State Hospital at Central Islip for both sexes. At that date there were 30 buildings at Central Islip. In 1912, not including a group of four in process of construction, there are 118.”

  1. I have been looking for information about my great Aunt Mabel Mond. She lived at Wards Island as a young woman and was moved to Central Islip. She is listed as a patient at The Manahattan Psychiatric Hospital in the 1950 census. The social security death index listed her death in Aug 2011 at age 97 in Cheshire, Conn. I assume she was in a Nursing facility but the state of Conn does not have a death certificate for her. My father is now 90 and remembers his Aunt Mabel when he was very young. She was diagnosed with schizaphrenia in her early 20’s. I’d like to know where she is buried. Unfortunately, my father was not told more about his Aunt Mabel and after 1954 when his grandparents passed away he never found out any information. I have been working on our family tree and came across the information about her. Where do I go from here?

    • Have you tried requesting the certificate directly from the vital records office in Cheshire, New Haven ? This is a link to Marriage and Death Records. You may not be able to receive a certificate because of the date of death, but perhaps with documentation as being a direct relation, you may be able to receive one. Also, look further into the facility that your great Aunt passed away in. They may have records of the funeral home that handled the transport and burial. Search for local funeral homes in the area and search for funeral home records on Ancestry and family Search. Also, investigate newspapers in the area regarding the facility that your great Aunt passed away in. If it was not a nursing home, and instead an institution, there may be a cemetery on the grounds where patients were buried. If your great Aunt had siblings, are there cousins that would have more information ? I hope these suggestions help. I too am searching for more information on a Great Grandfather that passed away in 1914 at Central Islip State Hospital.

Marriage and death records are public records before 7/1/97. A certified copy, as of October 1, 2009, may be obtained for $20.00 with a completed application form. See Vital Records, at the CT Department of Public Health website a for restrictions after 7/1/97, when certain information must be redacted to the public. A government issued photo I.D. is required.

  3. We look for Jenny (Jane) Ney Galvin who may have been admitted at Islip early to mid 1930’s and may have died there. We only know she died before 1966. Born around 1896. Thanks.

  4. I too, have a great grandparent that died at Central Islip (Manhattan State Hospital) in 1913.
He is not buried there, but in trying to obtain information regarding his admittance in 1910, the New York State Office of Mental Health, will not release records under confidentially laws. They maintain this rule, even though as of March 26, 2013, the Federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) ruled that “protected health information” excludes information regarding “a person who has been deceased for more than 50 years”. I was also informed that the records that I seek are most likely in a storage facility on Staten Island, New York, and have possibly been breached and damaged during Hurricane Sandy. How sad to let this paperwork and family history rot away.

  6. I have also hit a brick wall in regards to my Great Grandfather, shows up on the 1950 census as a patient at the Central Islip State Hospital. He would have been 67 years old. No records in any death index, do not know what year he died, assuming at the hospital. I hope the legislation gets passed. The families deserve to know the fate of these descendents. There are less controls and safeguards on our national security.

      • The 1950 census will be available in 2020. In order to find Central Islip State Hospital: Find out the city, county, district, etc., Sign up for Ancestry.com, Search by county and state first, then district. It’s time consuming but you WILL find it! You just have to wait a few more months. Good Luck!

states he already has a 1950 census
showing his grandfather as a patient
          at Central Islip.
My question was, How, does he already
          have a 1950 census record ???

In the original comment before mine, the person stated that he
          ALREADY HAS THE 1950 CENSUS………..
I know WHEN the 1950 census will be released.
