Interesting Articles & Documents

The following blog posts, historical articles, documents, laws, and obituaries, are an extension of the book. They are provided here to further explain why Willard and all New York State insane asylums, later renamed state hospitals, were created. They are useful in understanding the social norms of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; the people who were involved in the decision-making processes; and the struggle between the county poor house system and the state system of caring for the insane. It is very important to have compassion for our ancestors who lived with a mental illness or a developmental disability by remembering that they were unnecessarily labeled as defective; removed from society; and in thousands of cases locked up against their will for the remainder of their lives.

  1. My question I have 1/2 sister – Elizabeth Heselton 1921 – 1928 that I believe was a patient at the Craig facility in 1928 and she died at the facility – is there any way of discovering any records of her being there? Thank you Edward Heselton
